1. What age should my child start martial arts?
Most children can start martial arts as early as age 3, depending on their attention span and ability to follow instructions. At Aurora Family Martial Arts, we offer age-appropriate classes that focus on coordination, listening skills, and confidence for younger students. Starting early helps build strong habits that carry into school and other activities. If you’re unsure, the best way to find out is to try a free beginner class and see how your child responds.
2. Is martial arts safe for beginners?
Yes—martial arts is very safe when taught in a structured, beginner-friendly environment. Our classes in Aurora focus on controlled movements, proper technique, and respect for others, not aggression. Students are closely supervised, and beginners are introduced step-by-step to build confidence safely. Safety and positive development are always our top priorities.
3. Do you offer a trial class at Aurora Family Martial Arts?
Yes, we offer trial classes so your child can experience a real class before committing. This gives you a chance to see how our instructors teach and how your child responds to the environment. Many families in Aurora start this way to make sure it’s the right fit. Just click HERE, email us at info@aurorafamilymartialarts.com or call us at 905-713-1774.
4. What happens in my child’s first class?
In a first class, you or your child will be welcomed by the instructor and guided through basic movements in a fun, supportive way. In our Beginner Kids Classes, we focus on simple skills, improving fitness, and listening. Our goal is to make them feel successful right away. There’s no pressure to be perfect—just for them to try their best. Most kids leave their first class feeling excited and proud of themselves. In our Beginner Adult Classes, we’ll focus on simple skills, a basic self-defense move and assessing your fitness so that we can provide a program that benefits you the most. Most adults leave their first class excited, energized and looking forward to their next class.
5. Does my child need any experience to start?
No experience is needed at all—most of our students start as complete beginners. Our programs are designed to teach everything step-by-step, from the basics upward. We work with each child at their own pace so they feel comfortable and confident. Beginners are always welcome at Aurora Family Martial Arts.
6. Is martial arts good for shy or introverted kids?
Yes—martial arts is one of the best activities for shy or introverted kids. The structured environment, clear goals, and supportive coaching help children build confidence gradually without feeling overwhelmed. Many parents in Aurora notice their child becoming more comfortable speaking up and participating over time. It’s a great way to build confidence in a positive setting.
7. Can martial arts help with focus or ADHD?
Martial arts can be very helpful for improving focus, self-control and discipline. Classes are structured with clear instructions, repetition, and goal-setting, which helps kids develop better attention skills. Many parents see improvements in listening, discipline, and behavior at home and school. While it’s not a medical treatment, it’s a strong supportive activity for kids who need help with focus.
8. What if my child is not athletic?
That’s completely okay—your child does not need to be athletic to start martial arts. Our programs are designed to build coordination, strength, and confidence over time. Every child starts at a different level, and we focus on progress, not perfection. Many kids who begin with no athletic background gain confidence quickly as they improve.
9. Will this help my child build confidence?
Yes—building confidence is one of the biggest benefits of martial arts. As students learn new skills and progress through belt levels, they gain a strong sense of accomplishment. Our instructors in Aurora focus on encouragement, goal-setting, and positive reinforcement. Over time, this helps children believe in themselves both on and off the mat.
10. How do you handle kids who are nervous or anxious?
We work with nervous children in a patient and supportive way, allowing them to ease into the class at their own pace. Instructors provide encouragement and simple instructions so kids can build confidence step by step. We never force participation—our goal is to make them feel comfortable first. Most kids settle in quickly once they see how positive and welcoming the environment is.
11. How many classes per week should my child attend?
Most children benefit from attending 2–3 classes per week. This provides enough consistency to build skills and confidence without feeling overwhelming. Some families start with one class and increase as their child becomes more comfortable. We can help you choose a schedule that works best for your family.
12. How long does it take to earn a black belt?
Earning a black belt typically takes several years, depending on consistency and effort. Martial arts is designed as a long-term journey that builds discipline, perseverance, and skill over time. At Aurora Family Martial Arts, we focus on steady progress rather than rushing through belts. The goal is meaningful development, not just the belt itself.
13. What should my child wear to their first class?
For their first class, your child can wear comfortable athletic clothing like a t-shirt and sweatpants. There’s no need for a uniform right away. Once they decide to continue, we’ll guide you on the proper uniform and equipment. The most important thing is that they feel comfortable and ready to move.
14. How much do classes cost and are there contracts?
Pricing varies from $49.99 to $94.99 bi-weekly, depending on the program and schedule that you choose. We focus on making our programs accessible for families in Aurora while providing high-quality instruction. You can always call us at 905-713-1774, text us at 365-882-1775 or email us at info@aurorafamilymartialarts.com and we can review all of your options with you.
15. How do I choose the right school? What makes Aurora Family Martial Arts different from other martial arts schools in Aurora?
Every school is a little different and the best way to see which fits you best is by trying a free class at them. If you enjoy the class, other factors to consider are whether the schedule fits your needs, the cost of the program, and whether you get along with the instructors. The reality is that the style of martial art doesn’t matter as much as the fit with the student.
Aurora Family Martial Arts has been named the #1 Martial Arts School by Readers Choice numerous times over the years and has over 100 5-star reviews to back it up. Our classes focus on creating a positive, structured environment where students build confidence, discipline, and life skills—not just physical techniques. Our instructors take the time to work with each student individually and support their progress. We emphasize respect, encouragement, and personal growth in every class. Many families choose us because of our supportive community and beginner-friendly approach.
16. What if my child wants to quit martial arts?
It’s completely normal for kids to feel like quitting at some point—this happens in almost every activity, not just martial arts. At Aurora Family Martial Arts, we see these moments as opportunities to build resilience, not reasons to stop right away. Our instructors use simple strategies like setting short-term goals, giving extra encouragement, and helping students reconnect with what they enjoy about class. We also work with parents to understand what’s causing the frustration and find the right approach to support the child. In many cases, kids who push through this phase come out more confident and proud of themselves. If, after trying these approaches, your child still feels strongly about stopping, we respect that decision and make it easy to part ways. Read the full article….
