Don’t want to change just in January

We cannot put off living until we are ready. – Jose Ortega Y Gasset
This time of year we see lots of people coming into the school prepared to make THIS year, the best year of their lives by taking charge of their health, finances, read more, get a new job, higher marks in school, a new boyfriend or girlfriend and maybe learn Mandarin. THIS is the year that they’re going to start really living.
Instead of seeing January 1st as a chance to hit reset and change all that we’re unhappy with because we feel some obligation to the date, perhaps we could see the whole year as a chance to make change. Now, it may be difficult to be motivated to do that part way through the year, but if we only make change once or twice a year, then we never really get used to doing it and it becomes a skill that we never acquire.
One of the reasons I love the martial arts, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Tai Chi or whatever else, is because it often FORCES me to change even when I’m don’t feel ready to do it. Perhaps it’s learning a new kata or sparring with someone that’s above my level of (that’s happened to all of us at one point or another) that forces me to learn a new technique, become comfortable working with a different person and move forward as a person.
This year, let’s not just limit our thoughts of growth and change to January when we feel like it, but try and put ourselves in situations throughout the whole year that will really help make 2019 our best year ever.
To your success,
